Chemical engineers William Burton and Robert Humphreys of Standard Oil patent a method of oil refining that considerably will increase gasoline yields. Often known as thermal cracking, the chemists discover that by applying each heat and pressure throughout distillation, heavier petroleum molecules may be broken down, or cracked, into gasoline lighter molecules. The discovery is a boon to the brand new auto business, whose gas of selection is gasoline.
